How to Crochet a Velvet Hat using the Wheel Stitch - Free Pattern (2024)

This free crochet pattern is called the Velvet Hat or Wheel Hat. The pattern uses the Catherine’s Wheel Stitch and Velvet yarn to make it very snuggly.

When the velvet yarn became trending, I knew I had to create a hat with it. It was just a matter of figuring out which stitch to use. Then I remembered the Catherine’s Wheel stitch I had used recently and just had to use it to make this amazing Velvet Hat.

The Wheel Hat is so amazingly soft, you don’t want to take it off once you wear it. In fact, my hubby “stole” it from me and now is using it all around the house. Yes, not just outside, but also inside.

I added a faux-fur pom-pom on top that to provide a special extra touch that just makes this velvet Wheel Hat come together and complete. I can’t imagine wearing this hat without it now.

Considering it is extreme winter weather right now, I knew I had to pick winter colors for this hat. The navy and the chilled blue colors make it look like ice.

And the Catherine’s Wheel stitch with this yarn color make it look like snowflakes and ice being created in very cold weather. Just imagine it. Doesn’t it look like that?

How to crochet the VelvetWheelHat

Materials:

• Bernat Velvet yarn in the colors
  • Navy (Dark blue)
  • Chilled Blue (light blue)
• 6.0 mm hook
• scissors
• tapestry needle

Stitches used (US terms):

Click HERE to learn these basic stitches

• ch = chain
• sc = single crochet
• blo= back loop only
• dc = double crochet
• dc cl = double crochet cluster
• Catherine’s Wheel Stitch

Gauge:

For 1 dc cluster: 2 row x 7 sts =2 square inches

Final Size:

Adult size: 9.5 (diameter) x 9 (height) inches

Instructions:

This pattern is written for an adult head, but it can easily be adjusted to different head sizes. Just follow this TUTORIAL. Also be sure to check out the tutorial for the Catherine’s Wheel Stitch as that is the stitch used for this hat.

Make a chain of 8 in dark blue

R1: crochet in the back bump: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each ch, turn

R2-44: 1 sc in the blo in each st, turn (7 sts) (The number of rows depends on the head size you are making the hat for.)

Now fold the rectangle in half and slip stitch the ends together. You finished the brim. You are now going in rounds around the edge of one side of the brim.

R1: crochet evenly 60 sc’s all around, sl st to the first st (This number would be different for any other head sizes, but for the Catherine’s Wheel Stitch make sure it’s a multiple of 10.)

Change color to light blue

R2:Crochet an alternative turning chain and 3 dc in the same st. Then skip 3 sts, crochet 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, skip 3 sts. After that crochet *7 dc’s in the same st, then skip 3 sts, crochet 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts and skip 3 sts. Repeat from * until the end and crochet 3 more dc into the same stitch as the first st, slst to the first st. (60 sts)

Change color to dark blue

R3: Start with crocheting 2 sc’s in the first 2 sts, then ch 3. After that crochet a 7 dc cluster over the next 7 sts. Ch 3 and crochet *1 sc in each of the next 3 sts and ch 3 and crochet a 7 dc cluster over the next 7 sts, ch 3. Repeat from * until the end where you crochet 1 more sc, sl st to the first st.

R4: Crochet 1 sc in the next 2 sts. Then skip 3 sts, and crochet 7 dc’s in the next st. Skip 3 sts and then crochet *1 sc in each of the next 3 sts and skip 3 sts. After that crochet 7 dc’s in the next st, skip 3 sts. Repeat from * until the end where you crochet 1 more sc, sl st to the first st.

Change colors during the last sc.

R5: Crochet an alternative turning chain that you don’t finish and 3 dc (don’t finish each until you have 5 loops on hook) in the next 3 sts, all together as a cluster (equivalent to a 4 dc cluster). Ch 3 and crochet 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 3. After that crochet, a *7 dc cluster over the next 7 sts, then ch 3, crochet 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 3. Repeat from * until the end where you crochet a 3 dc cluster into the same st as the first st (that finishes the 7 dc cluster from the beginning), sl st to the first st.

R6 – 11: repeat rounds 2 through 5 (the amount of rounds depend on the head size you are making).

After you finished, weave the last yarn color you used through the top of the hat and then pull tightly to close the opening to make a hat (careful this velvet yarn is not the strongest and rips easily).

The Break-Through Moment: To add a pom-pom or not?

Well, I added a pom-pom, but it is a faux fur one. I attempted to make a velvet yarn pom-pom, but this yarn just sheds too much. I have a different velvet yarn from Hobby Lobby that I have not tried to make pom-poms with, but it was a different color that did not fit. So, I added a faux fur pom-pom.

But do you need one? No, you can choose to leave it off. In fact, you can even make this hat larger in height and create a slouchy Velvet Wheel Hat. If you do, please show me, I would love to see it.

Anyways, I would not recommend a velvet pom-pom (if you make it yourself) for the Velvet Wheel Hat. Add a pom-pom or leave it; it’s totally up to you.
