World's first smog vacuum cleaner opens in Abu Dhabi

Studio Roosegaarde collaborated with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and Modon to enhance air quality and install the first SMOG FREE TOWER in Abu Dhabi. The SMOG FREE TOWER uses ionisation technology to capture pollution and create a clean air park after its introduction to China, the Netherlands, South Korea and Poland.

From the captured smog particles a SMOG FREE RING is created as a tangible souvenir. By sharing a SMOG FREE RING you donate 1000 m3 of clean air to the city.

Open for public at Hudayriyat Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

FAQs

Does the Smog Free Tower work? ›

The functioning of the SMOG FREE TOWER has been validated by professor Dr. Bert Blocken of the Eindhoven University of Technology and is successfully implemented in South Korea, China, the Netherlands and Poland.

How much does a Smog Free Tower cost? ›

World's largest air cleaning tower

It was funded by the provincial government and costs US$2 million. The running cost is $30000 per year.

How does the Smog Free Tower clean the air? ›

By charging the Smog Free Tower with a small positive current, an electrode will send positive ions into the air. These ions will attach themselves to fine dust particles. A negatively charged surface — the counter electrode — will then draw the positive ions in, together with the fine dust particles.

What is the science behind smog tower? ›

Pollution Reduction: The primary benefit of Smog Tower is the reduction of airborne Particulate Matter (PM). The contaminated and polluted air is taken into the structure, passed through a series of filters, and clean air is released back into the atmosphere.

What are the benefits of Smog Free Tower? ›

The smog tower works in such a way that it helps in reducing approx. 94% of airborne particulate matter. It transforms the fine and ultrafine dust particles into coarse dust.

What motivated Roosegaarde to design the Smog Free Tower? ›
