An iconic establishment in Barcelona, Bar Bauma has served as a central hub for local writers and creatives for over 80 years. In 2023, the torch was passed to the passionate new owners, Somos Esencia, who pledged to preserve the historical charm of the bar while injecting a modern twist. Harnessing their vast knowledge in designing for the hospitality industry, the team at the branding and design studio Dennis constructed a robust brand and corresponding menu designs that seamlessly blend reverence for the past with innovative updates that prepare the establishment for the future.Read the case study → t-bi.link/barbauma

No one does local culture and contemporary luxury together better than Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, and its Tokyo property is no exception. For Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, the design takes inspiration from the nation's geographical features, which includes an abundance of mountains and water that have continuously nourished the grounds and spirits of its people. The concept is 'Wood and Water', and the artful establishment, while also considered as a comforting tree of shelter, expresses the theme from its architectural exterior to the very pattern of each room's wallpaper. It's almost a bit disturbing how often the subject of toilets has come up in the stations of the future work I've been doing. When we spoke with passengers, the state of most station washrooms was an almost universal complaint. I even have the client in my ear most days with his bug bear about the lack of places to place a bag when nature calls. So, that's why this initiative in Tokyo is really quite interesting. The Tokyo Toilet project where 16 artists have been handed the reins for creating spaces that have traditionally been designed with little imagination in mind. Just like when we've had people responsible for stations describe them as 'boxes where people get on and off trains', well, I'm sure you can imagine how the person responsible for public conveniences might describe the loos. There are engineering and accounting minded solutions to better restrooms. But sadly, most of them are probably not very nice places. So when you bring a little design in, perhaps it changes the care and attention give to such places. Perhaps people use them a little more respectfully, and maybe they are given a little more care and maintenance to keep them pleasant. Something to think about in a world crying out for public spaces with better design. #publicspaces #design https://tokyotoilet.jp/en/
